"Smoke on the water..."

After leaving Pfunds, we decided to forego the Aarlberg Tunnel and head over the pass instead because the  roads were dry, the sun was shining and all of Holland was going through the tunnel on their way home. And it does beat the heck out of driving the 401 from Guelph to Windsor...

Unfortunately at the end of the road, Lucerne was a snowy/rainy affair which evolved overnight  into a full - on fog so we never did get the famous views of Mount Pilatus backdropping the Kapelbrucke. We both had fond memories of being here a lifetime ago on our way back from NZ and it's still a very charming place.

We had a good walk around the old city which was mostly deserted and then strangely emptied out when all the stores closed at 4PM on a Saturday. We did stumble upon a wedding party leaving church in the rain to the accompaniment of the LOUDEST bells we have ever heard

As we headed south towards Verbier we passed close to Lake Montreux which was still hanging onto a layer of fog which reminded us of the old Deep Purple song

Our lodging for the week is actually in Le Chable at the base of the mountain where things are a little more chill and inexpensive and tomorrow we start our off-piste ski week with Emma Cairns of Element Concept Ski School whose task it will be to teach some old dogs a few new tricks.
More to come...
