Welcome to Val Gardena

Well here goes - the start of our "ski sabbatical" and our first attempt at "blogging" (courtesy of Sam's techno-assistance). The purpose of this project is to keep a record of our trip for future reference and to give our friends and family an easy way to follow us as they wish - no verbal abuse please RJL!

Travel days are always fun and ours was no exception.  We had inadvertently stumbled into the mass exodus of ski-box adorned luxury German wagons heading South for national holidays and it was a most welcome sight when the Alps finally came into view as we drove from Munchen towards Innsbruck.  After a long "overnight" flight we were all pretty bagged* and the encouragement offered by those soaring peaks and the promise of skiing helped no little in guiding us to Val Gardena and our new home in Ortesei/St Ulrich/Urtijei.
It turns out that the villages in this region each carry three versions of their names to pay homage to their triple ancestry of Italian, German and  Ladin, although none provided this information to Garmin which makes for interesting navigational challenges.
Here is an overview of our proposed itinerary courtesy of  Via Michelin:

After snaking up a mountain valley road an hour out of Innsbruck, we finally made it to Apartment Walter Senoner overlooking the village of Ortesei  just in time for  a quick stroll around, shopping, unpacking, dinner and lights out.

And tomorrow, we ski!
